January 17, 2003
The fourth meeting of the University Faculty Senate for this academic year
will take place on Tuesday, January 28, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. in 112 Kern Graduate
Building. The Senate welcomes visitors to this plenary session. Members of the
University community who are not senators and who wish to address the Senate
at this meeting on an item of business on the day's agenda must seek permission
from the Chair of the Senate through the Executive Secretary, Susan Youtz (scy1@psu.edu),
before Friday noon, January 24, 2003.
The agenda will consist of two parts.
Agenda - Part I
1. The Senate will honor Professor Patricia Koch, Department of Biobehavioral Health in the College of Health and Human Development, recipient of the 2002 Alumni Teaching Fellow Award.
2. President Spanier will address the Senate and answer any questions that senators may pose.
Agenda - Part II
The Senate will then discuss five issues:
1. Each year, the University sets aside spaces at the University Park Campus for eligible freshmen with special needs that usually cannot be met at non-University Park locations. The spaces are called Reserved Spaces. Since these spaces are generally for students whose evaluation indices are below the cutoffs for regular fall admissions at University Park, the Senate annually reviews the program and monitors its success.
2. The Senate will review the number of Senate seats allotted to each location for the academic year 2003-04.
3. This past Fall Semester, the Senate officers visited eleven campus locations and met with students, faculty, and administrators to discuss issues of concern. The officers have reported these topics to the Provost and to the Dean of the Commonwealth College. The officers now report to the Senate about the following topics: advising, first year seminars, curricular drift, calendar change, consequences of the reorganization, and issues surrounding delayed registration.
4. William Anderson, Assistant Vice President for Physical Plant, will provide a progress report on the many buildings going up across the University Park Campus. In April, he will report on construction projects at non-University Park locations.
5. Dan Sieminski, Assistant Vice President for Finance and Business, will discuss the proposed sale of Circleville Farm.
At its January 14, 2003 meeting, Senate Council approved the following name changes:
1. The College of Engineering will change the name of the School of Engineering Technology and Commonwealth Engineering to the School of Engineering Design, Technology and Professional Programs.
2. The College of Education will change the name of the Department of Adult Education, Instructional Systems, and Workforce Education and Development to the Department of Learning and Performance Systems.
Senate Council also approved revisions to the Worthington Scranton Campus Constitution.
